ThinkFirst offers free sports helmets

ThinkFirst Foundation and the Ministry of Health Promotion are teaming up under the Ontario Safe Sport Helmet Initiative to provide free sports helmets to Ontario community centres, recreation centres and non-profit youth-focused groups that offer sport or recreation programs targeting those in financial need. Applications are due by Oct. 19.

The first phase of the program was announced in August 2007, when ThinkFirst distributed 1,000 bicycle helmets to children and youth in four cities. The second phase targets groups that offer sport or recreation programs targeting those in need. The helmets are to remain the property of the centre to be used on a “loaner” basis by children to improve safe access to sport and recreational opportunities that require helmets. About 6,000 helmets will be distributed to facilities around Ontario.

Applications are due to ThinkFirst Foundation by Oct. 19 and applicants will be notified of their status by early November 2007. Visit ThinkFirst to download an application.
