Ontario Injury Data Report 2018
Parachute and the Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre are pleased to announce the release of the new Ontario Injury Data Report 2018 (OIDR 2018). An update from the 2012 edition, this new report presents the latest available counts and rates of injury related emergency room (ER) visits, hospital visits and deaths by cause of injury in Ontario from a province-wide perspective.
ER visits and Hospital visits include cases in a two year period between April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2016 (Fiscal Years 2014/15- 2015/16). Deaths include cases within five calendar years, from 2008 to 2012. (Calendar Years 2008-2012)
Audience
The OIDR 2018 is useful for injury prevention practitioners, healthcare and public health professionals, as well as anyone with an interest in injury
prevention.
Purpose
Data within the OIDR 2018 provides a province-specific view of the burden of injuries in Ontario, and can be used to identify vulnerable populations who may be at a higher risk for a particular cause of injury. Age and population specific data presented within the report can also be used to identify trends within injury morbidity and mortality in Ontario to inform the development and implementation of appropriate health promotion programming and injury prevention strategies.
Here are some Report highlights:
- More than 2.4 million Ontarians visited an emergency room as a result of injuries in FY 2014-2016
- Falls as the single highest contributor of ER visits across all age groups and causes of injury (N=850,003) in FY 2014-2016
- Injuries accounted for approximately 144,000 hospital visits in FY 2014-2016.
- Over 25,600 Ontarians died as a result of injuries in a five-year period between 2008-2012
- Seniors older than 80 experienced most fall-related injuries resulting in ER visits (N=132,070) in FY 2014-2016

Highlighting Injury Prevention in Ontario: It’s Worth the Investment
This document offers information and tools for injury prevention practitioners to raise the profile of injury prevention in Ontario and Canada.
Injuries are the leading cause of death for people within the ages of 1 and 44. On the other hand, there is evidence that injuries are preventable. This collaborative project came out of a need for consistent messaging in the province, as well as the need to involve all the relevant stakeholders in order to implement effective injury prevention initiatives. This successful collaboration was led by:
Northwestern Health Unit
Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre
Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation
Ontario Public Health Injury Prevention Managers' Alliance
The Regional Municipality of York

Fentanyl Patch Return Program Guidelines
The Fentanyl Patch 4 Patch (P4P) Return Program was first implemented in the District of Nipissing on December 6, 2013. With the identification of the fentanyl issue in the community by the North Bay City Police Crime Unit, and a partnership between the North Bay & Area Drug Strategy Committee, physicians and community pharmacists, the program was developed, implemented and shared throughout the Province of Ontario.
The North Bay and Area Drug Strategy has created and shared these documents to help the implementation of the P4P program in communities across the province. The resources below are free for your use.

Evidence-Informed Practice Recommendations
Overview
In April, 2013, the Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre released the Ontario Regional Injury Data Report. The report presented the most common causes of injury in each Ontario region (Central East, Central West, Eastern, South West, Northern and Toronto) in terms of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths. The regional reports contain recommendations pertaining to the most common causes of injury in each respective region.
The Evidence-Informed Practice Recommendations document is a compilation of all evidence-informed practice recommendations prepared for each region. By combining each of the evidence-informed recommendation sections into one document, injury prevention practitioners will have access to prevention strategies for the most common causes of injury across the province, in addition to the strategies provided in the individual regional reports.
In accordance with the most common causes of injury in Ontario, evidence-informed practice recommendations have been prepared on the following topics:
- falls
- off-road vehicles
- on-road vehicles
- pedestrian incidents
- unintentional poisoning
- suffocation and breathing-related incidents
- sports and recreational injuries
- suicide
- violence

Injuries Among Seniors in Ontario
The Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre has released the report Injuries among Seniors in Ontario: A Descriptive Analysis of Emergency Department and Hospitalization Data.
Key findings include:
- In 2004/05, there were over 1.3 million emergency department visits due to injury in Ontario. Adults 65 years of age and older accounted for 11% of these visits, totalling over 146,000 visits.
- There were a total of 76,444 injury hospitalizations in Ontario during the 2004/05 fiscal year. Seniors accounted for 40% of these hospitalizations, which amounts to almost 31,000 injury hospitalizations.
- Falls were by far the most common type of injury for seniors, followed by transport incidents.
The report also presents patterns of emergency visits and hospitalizations for a variety of factors, such as age, sex, month of admission, cause of injury and discharge status. In addition, injury patterns are broken down by region and Local Health Integration Network.
Two sources of injury data were used: emergency department data from the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) and acute care hospitalization data from the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) at the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

Ontario Regional Injury Data Report (2012)
Overview
Data
The Ontario Regional Injury Data Report presents the counts and rates of injury-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths by cause of injury for all Ontario health regions. The OIPRC hopes that by providing these counts and rates, communities throughout the province can better understand the most common injury causes throughout the various areas in our province, which will assist in developing and implementing evidence-based strategies tailored to their specific injury needs. These data also identify population subgroups who are more vulnerable to or at a higher risk for a particular cause of injury. As such, these data can help inform the development and implementation of appropriate health promotion programming and injury prevention strategies targeting specific injury causes and specific age groups.
Practice Recommendations
In addition to providing data for each of Ontario’s regions, this report also includes evidence-informed practice recommendations, which have been included as appendices to the methodology section. These recommendations have been created based upon the major injury issues within each region and outline the associated evidence-informed practices for each of these top injuries. As such, readers can utilize the provided tables to identify major injury issues within their region and refer to the associated recommendation sections to investigate potential programming initiatives that could be applied.
The evidence-informed practice recommendations are also available as a separate document.
Click here for more information about the Evidence-Informed Practice Recommendations.
Report format
Due to the amount of data, the Ontario Regional Injury Data Report is not one document, but has been divided into six separate documents corresponding to each region: Northern Ontario, Eastern Ontario, Central East, Toronto, Central West, and South West.
Report version and updates
The most current release of the report is Version 1.0. Any errata will be noted in future reports with a change in version number, and will be available on this page. To be notified automatically of any new revisions to the report, please subscribe to the ORIDR Notification mailing list by sending an email to ORIDR-subscribe@parachutecanada.org
